Minister of Health

I consider it as a privilege to release this message on the occasion of the 150th year Anniversary of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL).

Most of us may not be aware that NHSL is one of the largest government hospitals in the world. Through its 150 years of existence it has rendered invaluable service to the Nation by providing free healthcare to people of all walks of life without any discrimination.

During the tenure of this government many landmark improvements have been planned to modernize and enhance the capacities of NHSL. The recently opened 9 storey 3rd Medical Block consisting of many wards, the almost completed 8 storey Epilepsy building and the 10 storey Dental building bear testimony to the commitment of the government towards enhancing the facilities of NHSL.

Keeping in line with the government health policy the Health Ministry has formulated policies and guidelines to prevent Communicable Deceases as well as Non Communicable Deceases. Significant inroads have been made in Dengue prevention and prevention of NCDs in the recent past. The actions taken to educate the public of dangers of smoking by displaying pictorial warnings on cigarette packets manifests the commitment of the Ministry towards improving the quality of the healthcare of the populace.

In this background we continue our efforts to transform NHSL to a new level of healthcare facility which will fulfil the aspirations of the general public in the domain of quality healthcare.

Lastly, my sincere appreciation goes to my predecessors, all former Secretaries, the present and former Directors of NHSL, all present and former Consultants, all Doctors and other medical and non-medical staff for their invaluable services which have helped NHSL to achieve the present status.
