Message From The Deputy Director General

Deputy Director General of NHSL
Dr. Anil Jasinghe

Almost everyone knows by now that National Hospital of Sri Lanka is celebrating its 150 years of service to the Nation this year.

During its journey of 150 years it has served an enormous number of patients who came in search of remedies to their various health related problems. Gradually NHSL became the largest Government run hospital in the whole of Asia with a staff over 7500 employees.

Presently, we are engaged in a mission to modernize the hospital and improve the standard of health care provided by it to higher standards. In order to achieve this objective we have drawn a plan which is mainly focused on improving patient care and creating a patient friendly environment.

In this exercise we have not limited our efforts to government funding but also looking at alternative sources of funding such as donations from private sector, profit making government institutions and international donor agencies.

Following projects are a few to mention which are earmarked for 150th anniversary. These projects are initiated in 2014 and will be completed by 2014-2015.

  • Facelift of wards with the maintenance support for five years by governmental and private organizations.

  • Renovation of the EW Perera Mawatha.

  • Launching of electric vehicles for internal transportation of patients within the NHSL.

  • Initiation of Information Hub for the convenience of the public, the NHSL staff and staff of other hospitals.

  •  Landscaping of entire NHSL premises inclusive of repair of adjacent corridors and structures to create a patient friendly environment.

  • Installation of solar powered lighting in the garden and walkways.

  • Energy conservation project.

  • Laying of underground fibre optic IT cables all over the premises for greater integration and enhancement of patient care.

  • Launching of an interactive web site with domains of administrative services, clinical care and public utility.

  • Introduction of a LabMIS (Laboratory Management Information System).

  •  Establishing a Simulating Centre for Clinical Procedures

  • Establishing a medical Library for grade medical officers and Consultants.

  • Establishing a library for nursing officers.

  • Modernizing & refurbishing of lecture halls & auditoriums.

  • Modernization of the signage system.

It is our fervent hope that we will be able to achieve the desired objective on the successful completion of above projects.

Here, I would like to thank the Honorable Minister of Health for expeditiously obtaining approval of the Cabinet for much needed comprehensive renovation of the Bandaranaika building, the flagship building of the NHSL which will begin this year itself.

I take this opportunity to thank all present and former Health Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Ministry Secretaries, Director Generals of health Services, all other Ministry Officials, Directors of NHSL, Consultants, Doctors, Nursing Staff, Paramedical staffs and all other supporting staffs whose invaluable services have enabled this great institution to grow from strength to strength.

Also my sincere gratitude goes to the private sector donors, other stakeholders and the hospital committee members who have supported us in our mission of transforming NHSL to be the best healthcare facility in Asia.
