Aiming at the wellbeing of the National Hospital staff , a health screening program launched on 18th March 2014 in par with the 150th anniversary of the hospital, as a brain child of the director NHSL.
More than 2000 health staff belonging to all the categories ranging from consultant medical officers to health assistants has being covered and continuing.
Any the participant undergo general physical examination and Body Mass Index is calculated, then basic investigations like Full Blood Count, Post Prandial Blood Sugar , Serum Cholesterol are checked. If any of the screening investigations are abnormal, further investigations like HbA1C ,Lipid Profile are done. All the participants with abnormalities are consulted by a Consultant Physician and dietary advice will be given.
This program aiming at the Non Communicable Diseases like Hypertension, Diabetes mellitus , hypercholesterolemia , Chronic Kidney Disease carried out by the Health Education unit of NHSL since 2004.
A monthly awareness program is conducted at NHSL aiming the health staff and the general public.
In this program participants are educated on the prevention of disease before it occurs and health tips on how to control a non communicable disease once it is started.
In this current year 9 programs were carried out and around 1600 target population were covered.
The Training and Health Promotion Centre of the Accident & Orthopaedic Service was established in 1991 under the FININDA Project. Since then this unit has established itself as the premier training centre on management of trauma in Sri Lanka.
The programs conducted are primarily aimed at strengthening technical and organizational skills of health workers mainly working in the curative health sector to improve the quality of the services delivered by them . Furthermore , programs are conducted for medical officers, nursing officers, medical students, pupil nurses, post graduate trainees, members of armed forces, members of governmental & non governmental organizations, trainees of private sector training institutions etc,.Tailor-made training programs for public sector organizations are also arranged on request. The AOS claims for best of trauma resources in the country and also has state of art training aides in trauma & resuscitation training.
The auditorium of AOS is equipped with modern multi media facilities.

This program was the initiated with the view of screening and improvement of the wellbeing of the NHSL staff in 2009, which was extended to outside government and non government departments by popular demand.
This program has covered more than 100 institutions through out the country from Schools in remote villages to Public Departments in Colombo. The theme for this program is “ Health for all Sri Lankansâ€.
As a team of National Hospital of Sri Lanka, we provide our excellence service with the support of Health Ministry.

The National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL), situated in Colombo on a 32-acre block of land, is the largest teaching hospital in Sri Lanka and the final referral centre in the country, consisting of 3000 beds. it is the training centre for undergraduates and postgraduate trainees of the Faculty of Medicine. The nursing training school, Colombo, PBS, and Schools of Radiography, Pharmacy, Cardiograph, physiotherapy and occupational therapy are also affiliated with the National Hospital.
The U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung paid a visit to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Colombo on 14 June 2022 to officially handed over much-needed medical consumables to the hospital donated by SLMANA Inc. The donation was accepted by Dr W.K. Wickremasinghe, DDG-NHSL and Dr Indika de Lanerolle, Consultant Emergency Physician. The United States, being an ally of Sri Lanka has always assisted the Sri Lankan public in times of crisis and the donated items shall facilitate the provision of continuous healthcare through NHSL-Colombo.
