NHSL COMMEMORATES CLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY 2017 WITH HANDWASHING CEREMONARY OF A DIFFERENT NATURE
Global Handwashing Day is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing as to prevent infectious diseases and save lives. It is celebrated annually on October 15 worldwide and it is an opportunity to encourage public and healthcare workers to wash their hand at critical times.
The 2017 Global Handwashing Day theme is ‘Our Hand Our Future!” emphasizing how hand washing protects our health allowing us to build our own future. It is very timely in the era of increasing trend of multidrug resistant and pandrug resistant microorganisms in healthcare as well as community settings.
The infection control unit of NHSL organized a handwashing ceremony in two sessions morning and afternoon filled with different types of educational activities namely handwashing step dances, dramas,’viridu”, presentations, handwashing demonstrations and hands on experience etc. targeting the healthcare workers in commemorating the Global Handwashing Day 2017 on October 20,2017 because we strongly believe that behavioural change in the healthcare workers is of utmost importance in preventing and controlling healthcare associated infections for which WHO five moments of handwashing contributes very strongly.
This was well attended by the hospital administrators, medical staff, nursing staff, paramedical staff namely physiotherapists pharmacists, medical laboratory technologists etc. public health inspectors, trainees of different health services, support staff. cleaning staff, visitors and some of the OPD patients of the hospital with great enthusiasm.
This was a very successful ceremony we could have due to the tireless effort, dedication and commitment of the members of the infection control unit as well as the great contribution extended by the members of the wards and other units of the hospital who participated in the educational events as important highlights in the ceremony.
